Your Teeth Need the Same Type of Priority as Your Overall Health

Posted on 12/20/2018 by Doctor Schwei
Your Teeth Need the Same Type of Priority as Your Overall HealthWhen people think of their physical health, they often think about what illnesses or diseases they have dealt with. They may think of broken bones, arthritis, and other aches and pains.

Many people don't think about their teeth. This leads to people often prioritizing their “health" over their dental needs, but that can have terrible consequences. Your teeth need the same type of priority and care as the rest of your body does.

What Can Happen if You Ignore Your Teeth?

If you don't take the time to ensure that you brush regularly and visit us whenever you see or feel something abnormal with your teeth, there are a number of things that can happen. The first, of course, is that you can develop cavities, gum disease, and other oral health issues. You may lose your teeth or be in horrible pain.

But the issues don't end there. If you have periodontal disease, you actually have a higher risk of having a stroke or developing heart disease. The bacteria that have infected your mouth can spread, leading to issues such as clogged arteries and issues breathing. There are even some links between poor dental health and dementia.

Developing Good Oral Health Habits

To combat this, you need to prioritize issues with your teeth and gums on the same level as you would other health concerns. If you noticed an odd lump or a strange pain that persisted for several weeks, you would schedule an appointment with your doctor pretty quickly.

You need to do the same if you notice your gums bleeding a lot or if you develop a sensitivity to hot and cold liquids. If we can identify and deal with any oral health issues early on, we can prevent further damage. Contact us today to schedule an appointment so we can help you make your teeth a priority.
