Do Some People Get More Cavities Than Others?

Posted on 1/10/2019 by Doctor Schwei
Do Some People Get More Cavities Than Others?Does it seem like you get more cavities than other people get? Unfortunately, it's not just your imagination. Some people do actually get more cavities than others, even if they brush and floss as they should.

The problem isn't in your oral hygiene habits—it's in your DNA and in what you eat.

Eat Less Sugar, Have Fewer Cavities

The simplest way of having fewer cavities is to eat less sugar. While we're not saying you should deny yourself all sugary treats, we do suggest that you cut out a lot of your daily sugar intake. Yes, have a piece of cake at your birthday party, but don't eat cookies for breakfast every single day.

All of that sugar will only feed the bacteria that live on your teeth. They will use it to start creating acids that destroy the enamel on your teeth and lead to cavities. Less sugar means less food for these bacteria to use, so there's less damage they can do.

Genetics Can Turn Against You
Scientists have discovered that some people are simply more likely to develop cavities than others. This is due to a number of factors, including how much saliva your mouth makes and the shape of your teeth. Some people have deeper crevices in their teeth than others. That means there's less enamel for the bacteria to have to work through.

What Can You Do to Prevent Cavities?

The first thing to do is to reduce the amount of sugar you eat. This may not seem easy at first, but you don't have to quit sugar cold turkey. Instead, slowly start replacing your sugary snacks with healthy ones. Even eliminating about half of the sugar you eat is going to help.

To combat crevices in your teeth, you can talk to us about sealants. This procedure involves filling up the deep crevices so that bacteria can't get down in there. It's fairly simple, so give us a call today so we can talk to you about it.
